Marie Theresa Gorsuch Hart

American, (1829–1921)
Marie Theresa Gorsuch Hart was born in New York, and apparently studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City. She began exhibiting her work as Marie Gorsuch at the Brooklyn Art Association when she was in her early 30s. In three separate exhibitions she showed four landscapes, including views of the Housatonic River and the Berkshires. She married James McDougal Hart in 1866, and afterwards exhibited as Mrs. James M. Hart, both in Brooklyn and at the National Academy. The Harts lived in Brooklyn until James died in 1901; thereafter, Marie settled in Lakeville, Connecticut. She died in her 90s, firmly established as a skilled painter both in watercolor and in oils.
